Solar Panels and Shading
A practical look at how much shading actually costs you, and what to do about it.
Assess it across the year
The sun is much lower in winter, so a shadow that misses the roof in June may cover it in December. A proper shading assessment considers the whole year, not the day of the survey.

Near and far shading
Near shading — a chimney, a vent, a neighbouring dormer — is sharp and moves quickly. Far shading from a tree line, a hill or a tall building is softer and lasts longer. They are handled differently in design.
Mitigations, honestly stated
Move the array to a clearer part of the roof; re-string so shaded panels sit together; add optimisers or microinverters. All help. None makes shading free.
Common questions
How much does shading cost me?
It depends entirely on what is shaded, when and for how long. Your installer's performance estimate should account for it.
What does the quote cost?
Nothing, and there is no obligation. The installer provides a free design and written quotation.
Who actually does the work?
A trusted MCS-certified installer covering Derby and the surrounding area. Solar Panels Derby is a quote service, not the installer, so the work, the price, the certification and the warranties are all theirs.
