Solar Inverters Explained
String inverters — how they work, how they are sized, and why they are the component most likely to need replacing.
What it does
Panels produce DC. The house and the grid run on AC. The inverter converts between them, and it is also where monitoring, safety disconnection and grid compliance live. It is the brain of the system.

Sizing
Inverters are commonly sized somewhat below the array's peak rating, because a UK array rarely hits its peak. Slight undersizing is deliberate and normal, and it improves how the system behaves for most of the year.
Service life
It is the component most likely to fail before the panels do. Warranties commonly run five to twelve years, sometimes extendable. Siting affects life: a well-ventilated position out of direct sun helps.
